The Gartner report discusses several planning assumptions that illustrate how quickly enterprise storage is evolving:
- “By 2029, 72% of heads of I&O will implement at least two hybrid cloud storage use cases, which is a significant increase from 33% in 2026.”
- “By 2029, 100% of enterprise storage products will include cyberstorage capabilities focused on active defense beyond recovery from cyber events, up from 20% in early 2026.”
- “By 2028, 20% of heads of I&O will deploy agentic AI-based autonomous storage infrastructure, up from less than 1% in 2026.”
- “By 2029, more than 60% of enterprises will replace separate storage products with a single storage platform serving both structured and unstructured data services, up from less than 25% in early 2026.”
- “By 2028, more than 20% of enterprises will run AI workloads—training and/or inference—in on-premises data centers, an increase from less than 2% as of the beginning of 2026.”
Taken together, we believe these predictions reflect a broader shift from managing storage capacity to managing intelligent, distributed data infrastructure. One of the biggest changes discussed in the report is the emergence of AI-specific storage architecture.
Modern AI workloads require organizations to deliver high-concurrency, low-latency access to massive volumes of unstructured data. Traditional storage architectures create I/O bottlenecks that leave expensive GPU resources waiting for data rather than performing inference.
