SQL Backup and Replication

Overview
Goal: Provide continuous data protection for MS SQL Servers.

When SQL server fails, your business suffers from interrupted data access and your office productivity slows down.

Businesses simply cannot afford data loss. Instantaneous and reliable access to data is one of the key competitive advantages for corporations operating in today’s economy.

Choosing the right SQL server backup solution is important to assure fast recovery from a server failure.

Periodic tape backups take more than a day to restore your data and that can leave your business unable to operate for too long, impacting your profits.

Business Challenges

While SQL server’s own copy utilities are helpful, they do not provide a true continuous data replication and backup solution. In addition, these backup utilities will enable you to create backup files of the selected databases without giving you true database replication to a standby server. In order to perform a true failover in the event of a primary server failure, the Administrator will have to restore the backups manually.

Also, what happens if you have 10 SQL Servers within your environment? How do you centralize these SQL server backup processes?

Peer Solution's Benefits

PEER DRS was created to provide the foundation for your centralized SQL Server Backup and SQL Replication requirements and to meet the challenges you face. This product also enables you to centralize your SQL and Exchange backups within one management console.

Peer DRS automates the replication of databases and incremental changes on a primary server, which are then restored onto one or more target standby servers. Transaction logs are automatically backed up throughout the day (for whatever interval specified), which are then automatically restored on a standby server located anywhere in the world.

Below are some of the key features of the Peer DRS (SQL Module):

  • Support for MS SQL Server 7.0, MS SQL Server 2000 (all versions) and MS SQL Server 2005 (all versions).
  • Ability to perform up to the minute incremental backups and replicate them to one or more warm standby databases.
  • Configure and manage all database backups and replications remotely from a central, client-based GUI.
  • Ability to replicate across a WAN via FTP, SFTP, SSH or a password protected Network Shared drive.
  • Cross platform Java-based application that can run on various operating systems such as Windows, Linux, Mac, etc.
  • Ability to use the standby server as a live read-only database.
  • Ability to send alert emails if connection to primary database cannot be established or if a backup or restore has not occurred within a configurable period of time.
  • Ability to report on all replication activity in real-time from a single control panel allowing for easy identification of current errors or for peace of mind by knowing everything is operating smoothly
